Brief History of Ihioma.

Ihioma is a nodal pre-colonial community which is situated in the South Eastern part of Nigeria. It is located in Orlu Local Government Area in Imo State, Nigeria.

The community comprised three kindreds namely Ebenese, Okwuabala and Umuezennachi. The three kindreds historically were said to belong to the same parents.

Ihioma’s geographical position enhanced its attraction to both educational and religious institutions much earlier from missionaries more than other adjoining communities. Consequently, the first fully female Secondary School (high school) of international standard named Holy Rosary Secondary School was built in Ihioma by the missionaries in the late fifties. However, not too long ago, an all-boys Secondary Comprehensive school was built to augment the Girls Secondary school.

A Catholic Church named Regina Pacis which served all other neighboring communities was also built in Ihioma. All of these helped in the development of Ihioma community to a semi urban town.

The first ever enviable and gigantic Community Center in old Orlu Province: Ihioma Youths Association Civic Center, was built in Ihioma.

As time went on, the three kindreds that made up Ihioma town gained autonomy and became Ebenese Autonomous Community, Okwuabala Autonomous Community and Ummuezennachi Autonomous Community.

Two more Autonomous Communities have emerged recently, namely:

  • Isiokwu Autonomous Community

  • Nnenato Autonomous Community

As of this year 2021, Ihioma has five Autonomous Communities that emerged from the original Ihioma Community.

Ihioma is endowed with a spring water called “Iyiokwu” that flows from granite rock where one can fetch water by standing with a bucket on his head. There is also a mini lake named “Iyi Ngodo” that sustained some artisanal fishing activity by the Fisheries Department of Imo State Government.

The autonomous communities are stable and peace loving, each headed by an Eze, addressed as “His Royal Highness” This is an apolitical traditional institution established for the smooth running and governance of the people in traditional values and systems..

The Ihioma International Association members are people who hailed from any of the five Autonomous communities and later emigrated, naturalized and took US citizenship or those that were born here in the United States.
